This is a religious holiday that is celebrated with tremendous zeal in every part of the country. Diwali is a Hindu festival, however it is celebrated by people of all religions.

Diwali is a five-day celebration that runs from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj. This celebration follows Dussehra by precisely 20 days. Diwali is considered as a celebration of sharing joy.

The first day is known as Dhanteras, and it is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. The second day is known as Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali, and it commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura. The main Diwali festival takes place on the third day. Govardhan Puja is celebrated on the fourth day. Because on this day, Lord Krishna raised the Govardhan mountain on his little finger and provided cover under it, saving the people from Lord Indra’s anger. On the fifth day, Dwitiya or Bhai Dooj is celebrated. This is a day when brothers and sisters get together to celebrate.

People begin planning for Diwali many days in advance for this day. They keep their homes immaculately clean, painted, and decorated. We make Rangoli to greet Ganesh ji and Lakshmi on Diwali. Diwali is observed on the Kartik month’s new moon day. Goddess Lakshmi is said to have been born on this day while the ocean was churning. She is known as the Wealth Goddess. As a result, Goddess Lakshmi-Ganesh is also worshipped during Diwali night.

On this day, everyone dresses up in new clothing, exchanges sweets, and bursts fireworks and crackers.

Why do we celebrate Diwali (हम दिवाली क्यों मनाते हैं)?

When it comes to Diwali beliefs, there are several ones. It is stated that once Dasanan Ravana(दशानन रावण) was defeated, Lord Rama-Sita and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya after a 14-year exile, and were welcomed by all the people of Ayodhya. Light diyas for them, and dance and sing for them with great joy and pleasure.

This festival also celebrates Shri Hargobind Singh, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, being released from the Mughal Emperor Jahangir’s jail. Guru Amardas, the third Guru of the Sikhs, laid the foundation stone of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab on this day.

The five Pandavas returned to Indraprastha after 12 years of exile, according to the Hindu epic Mahabharata, on the new moon day of the month of Kartik, when they were greeted with lights.

On this day, King Vikramaditya, who was known for his kindness, patience, and heroism, was crowned.

It is a religious holiday that celebrates the victory of goodness over evil. People worship and pray for their houses, which they decorate with flowers, colourful lights, diyas, and candles, in the hopes that they would provide happiness, keep bad thoughts at away, and keep going forward. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the people of all religions.

Tamaso Maa Jyotirgamaya (तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय) means “go from darkness to light” and Diwali brings this concept to life by reminding us that we must remove the darkness inside ourselves. Going towards the light means doing good, and only then will our future be bright.

Deepawali festival in rural area (ग्रामीण क्षेत्र में दीपावली का त्योहार)

When it comes to the village, Diwali is observed in a very traditional manner. Those who live in mud huts use cow dung to paint their homes, which is considered sacred. The majority of the residents here utilise earthen lamps with ghee or mustard oil in the diyas. Only a few people use candles here; candles are more commonly utilised in metropolitan areas.

The majority of the villagers try to buy helpful items from the locals, since this is the greatest option. Put an earthen lamp in water before Diwali evening and leave it there for a while so that the lamp burns longer with less ghee or oil than with more ghee or oil. Farmers light Diwali lamps in their fields as well.

The Ayurvedic god Dhanvantari(धन्वन्तरि) arrived with the nectar urn on this day, according to the scriptures, while the ocean was churning. As a result, Dhanvantari(धन्वन्तरि) ji is wished health, wealth, prosperity, and a rise in fortune on this day. This day is also associated with the purchase of new kitchenware as well as gold and silver jewellery.

It is considered auspicious to purchase new copper, brass, or silver utensils and jewellery on Dhanteras Day in exchange for the house’s damaged utensils. Buying a new broom and worshipping it is also considered auspicious by some.

Another mythology says that in olden history, a king named “Hem” was blessed with a kid in the form of a son after years of marriage. The astrologers predicted that the younger Raj Kumar would die after four days of marriage when they saw him. After some time had passed, the prince performed a “Gandharva Vivah” with a lovely girl and died four days after the wedding. Seeing this, his wife wept bitterly,

When the yumdut (messenger of Death) saw this, they asked Yamraj whether there was any way to ensure that no one died prematurely. Yamraj said that the person who lights the lamp in the south direction of his residence on Krishna Trayodashi of Kartik month should have no fear of dying prematurely.

As a result, during Dhanteras evening, there is also a tradition of offering a lamp to Yamraj in the house’s south direction.
